Illinois Indoor Track & Field
The Illinois women's indoor track team already had a taste of Big Ten championship glory with a title win in 1989, but the program hit its stride in the mid-1990s, winning four of five conference titles between 1992-96. Led by five-time Big Ten Coach of the Year Gary Winkler, the Illini earned their second league crown in 1992 with a historic pace. Illinois scored the largest margin of victory in conference history before outdoing that pace with 49-point wins in 1993 and 1995. The next season, the Illini garnered the program's highest-ever NCAA finish with a sixth-place team performance at the 1996 NCAA Championships. The 1996 group produced 29 All-America selections, including seven-time honoree Dawn Riley. She finished third in the national 55-meter hurdles competition, crossing the line at 7.62 seconds - a fraction after her teammate and fellow All-American Tonya Williams. That time still stands as the fastest in Illini indoor track history, but Riley's title performance at the 1996 Big Ten Indoor Championships has since been retired as the event record (7.69). Williams claimed six gold-medal finishes at the Big Ten indoor championships, including three straight wins in the 4x400-meter relay. Another sprint star for the Illini, Tonja Buford, claimed nine Big Ten titles during this time. A two-time Big Ten Athlete of the Year in 1992 and 1993, Buford led the field in the 55-meter hurdles for three-consecutive seasons from 1991-93. She also holds the best time in school history in the 300-meter dash. Seven other school records still stand from that era, including Collinus Newsome's shot put dominance. The hurler owns the top-five performances in the Illini record books, including the top distance of 53 meters in 1996.
