Michigan's Findlay and Northwestern's Delaney Take home Weekly Softball Accolades

April 28, 2008

Player of the Week

Samantha Findlay, Michigan
Sr., 2B, Lockport, Ill./Lockport East

Findlay went .600 (6-for-10) from the plate during the Wolverines' rivalry weekend, claiming three hits each in Michigan's series against Michigan State and Northwestern. She also accepted four weekend walks to claim sole possession of Michigan's career record in the category (150). It is the third U-M record she has broken this season, adding to her new career standards in home runs (59) and RBI (211). She picked up a pair of home runs against the Spartans, including a second-inning grand slam on Saturday--her third slam and 18th home run of the season. Against the Wildcats on Sunday, she ripped a bases-loaded single to leftfield in the bottom of the seventh to drive in a pair of runs and complete Michigan's 3-2 come-from-behind victory, forcing a series split to keep U-M tied atop the conference standings. The Lockport, Ill., native currently boasts a seven-game hitting streak. This is the second weekly honor of the season and third of her career.

Last MICH Player of the Week: Samantha Findlay (2/25/08)

Pitcher of the Week

Lauren Delaney, Northwestern
So., P, Jefferson City, Mo./Helias

Delaney's efforts over the weekend kept Northwestern in first place in the Big Ten with a 14-inning shutout and a win over No. 6 Michigan. Delaney began the week by allowing just four hits in a complete-game, 14-inning shutout of Penn State on Friday. At one point during the game, Delaney retired 21-consecutive batters in a row from the sixth to the 12th innings. She struck out a career-high 18 in the game. On Sunday, Delaney fanned 12 Wolverines and dominated the sixth-ranked team in the nation in a 2-1 victory. The Jefferson City, Mo., native pitched 34 innings last week, striking out 46 batters. This is the third weekly honor of the season and Delaney's sixth of her career.
