Big Ten Announces Softball Players of the Week

Feb. 18, 2008

Player of the Week

Tammy Williams, Northwestern
Jr., SS, Roscoe, Mo./Osceola

Williams led Northwestern to its first undefeated opening weekend in program history, including wins over No. 1 Arizona (also a program first) and No. 3 Texas A&M, with a .786 batting average (11-for-14). The Roscoe, Mo., native scored eight runs to average 2.0 per game and reach 146 for her career, tying Northwestern's career record. Against the third-ranked Aggies, Williams was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while she was a perfect 2-for-2 with two walks (one intentional) and two runs scored against No. 1 Arizona. Most impressive about Williams' .786 batting average was that it came against two All-America pitchers including last year's WCWS MVP, Taryne Mowatt. This is the first weekly honor for Williams this season and the fourth of her career.

Last NU Player of the Week: Erin Dyer (5/7/07)

Pitcher of the Week

Brittany Weil, Iowa
Jr., P, Garden Grove, Calif./Pacifica

Weil tossed 24.1 innings without allowing an earned run last weekend at the Metrodome Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. She struck out 29 batters and walked only five. The Garden Grove, Calif., native garnered  Metrodome Classic All-Tournament team honors for her efforts. Weil took a no-hitter into the fourth inning against Western Illinois before giving up one of the two hits in the game. She finished with a complete game two-hitter and struck out nine. Weil threw all eight innings in a 1-0, extra-inning victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday night. She allowed only one hit while striking out nine batters. The junior hurler sat down the first 12 batters in a row before giving up Tech's only hit in the fifth inning. She struck out at least one batter in six of the eight innings, including two in the first and three in the third. Weil picked up her third-straight win against Drake, tossing another complete game two-hitter. She struck out nine and walked only two. This is the second career weekly honor for Weil.
