EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State extended its lead in the second round, notching another 12-over-par 300 at the 2007 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships. The Spartans (300-300--600) closed out the day atop of the team standings with a strong 17-stroke lead over the reigning Big Ten Champion Purdue.

The Boilermakers sit in second place at 617 (309-308), followed by Northwestern (313-307--620), Ohio State (313-309--622) and Indiana (311-315--626). Illinois (320-314--634), Michigan (319-317--626), Wisconsin (317-322--639), Iowa (319-323--642), Penn State (327-321--648) and Minnesota (322-326--648) round out the field.

Rachel Meikle carried the Spartan contingent, registering a 2-under-par 69 in the second round for first place. She recorded five birdies, before tallying bogeys on the 14th and 18th to end her day.  The Spartan senior also tied the lowest 36-hole total at 140 (69-71) in Big Ten Championships history. Northwestern's Alice Kim established the record mark of 140 at last year's event and went on to capture the individual title.

Heading into Saturday's third round, Purdue's Christel Boeljon stands in second place with a 36-hole total of 147 (72-75), while Michigan State's Mandi McConnell (74-75--149) is third. Indiana's Anita Gahir (75-76) and Northwestern's Kim (78-73) are tied for fourth at 151.

Michigan State's Sara Brown (77-77--154) and Purdue's Maria Hernandez (80-74--154) are in sixth place, while three student-athletes - Illinois' Meghan Naik (81-74), Ohio State's Dana Je (74-81) and Gemma Webster (79-76) - are tied for eighth at 155.

Saturday's third-round action at the Forest Akers West Golf Course (par-72; 6,316 yards) will consist of 18 holes with tee times beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
