Game Two Post-Game Quotes

May 24, 2006

Purdue Head Coach Doug Schreiber

On his team's performance in today's game ...
"That was a great baseball game. Both starting pitchers did a great job and defense got out of innings. Both offenses couldn't get a whole lot going. We actually had more opportunities because we had more lead-off guys on. But we didn't bunt or we couldn't get the runner in from second base, we just couldn't get that one- or two-out hit. But you've got to give credit to the pitchers and the defense. And then Ohio State came up to bat and we had that god-awful pitch and the guy gets a double to lead off the inning which spelled some trouble. We had some poor execution and from that point on, we were pretty much in trouble. But it was a good baseball game. What Dan Sattler did against a team like Ohio State says even more about his performance. Anytime that you get that kind of an effort - one run in ten innings - that's a great day especially against a team that hits like Ohio State. I think this game shows that we can beat anybody, but it also shows that we can get beat by anybody. If anything, it encourages us to know that there's no reason why we shouldn't be in the ballgame. But now we've got a long road."

Ohio State Head Coach Bob Todd
On J.B. Shuck ...
"To be honest with you, if we get to where we want to be, he's going to be pitching Friday. We needed to throw the bullpen today anyway, and we felt like left-handed was the way to go and be a little more aggressive with them on the mound and neutralize a couple of their left-hand hitters. We felt like we got into the situation that we did, where we've got to play an extra two or three innings that J.B. [Shuck] was the right player for the job."

Pitcher Dan DeLucia
On today's pitchers' duel ...
"You have to give a lot of credit to Purdue. They came out to play today. I think the pitchers on both sides did a great job, especially J.B. [Shuck], coming in and getting us out of key situations. So it was an overall team effort, and I'm sorry one of the teams had to lose."

On throwing 130 pitches in the game ...
"My arm was getting a little tired. I actually thought I was going back out there for the 12th inning because no one really told me anything. I guess my arm is kind of used to throwing 130 pitches now, doing it again today. I was starting to get a little fatigued, but whatever you have to do to win the tournament. I'm going to try and bounce back. Hopefully we can keep winning to give me that chance."

Shortstop Jedidiah Stephen
On his game-winning hit ...
"I just wanted look for something up in the zone. With a guy throwing that hard, you're just looking to put the bat on the ball. I swung at a bad pitch the first pitch. There's a base open, so you're kind of thinking that they might pitch around you. But he came right at me and I just took a pretty good swing on it."

On Purdue's strategy in the 12th inning ...
"First of all, I'm surprised they didn't walk Ronnie [Bourquin]. I thought they would for sure, but they came right after him. They were fortunate enough to make good pitches and get him out. But for me, I don't know if he missed inside or what it was, but I just put a good swing on it. We played a heck of a game today, everybody. You can't say enough about Dan and J.B. I was just a great team win for us."
