Small in Size, Tall on Honors
Bryan Koniecko was a talented junior tennis standout that once thought that he might skip college and turn professional straight out of high school. He was competing in junior tournaments in the Australian Open and Wimbledon and was among the top 10 junior players in the United States. Some of the players he defeated on the junior tours are now ranked among the top 100 in the world. Still, it is believed that several colleges passed on Koniecko because of his small stature. Freshman Phenomenon
The day Oct. 7 is one on which several memorable records in the sports world were broken. For example, in 1984, Chicago's Walter Payton passed Jim Brown as the NFL's all-time career rushing leader. A Local Leader
Bill Wadley knew he faced a challenge when recruiting Matt Voelker to swim at Ohio State. The Buckeyes head coach knew that often times local kids like the Columbus native would want to leave town and get as far away from home as possible. He also knew that with the addition of the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, one of the nation's finest aquatic centers, and with being good friends with Voelker's high school coach and former Buckeye Kevin Chapman, he could have a shot at the young talent. Change For The Better
Looking back on his career as head coach of the Ohio State women's volleyball team, Jim Stone has experienced several changes to the sport that has helped make up most of his life. Some of those changes, such as attendance and method of travel, have been good for the sport, but changes in the recruiting process have not. On July 31, 2008, Stone will officially retire from coaching after 26 years, which will undoubtedly give Buckeye volleyball its most significant change yet. Full story... |
